Three Days in February- an award winning feature film, and live cinematic multi- genre music experience. A poetic, dialogue-free documentary observing three days of a diverse outdoor dance floor culture set at a remote New Zealand, (Aotearoa) music festival. Filmed over seven years, Three Days in February is a 74-minute observational work that invites the audience to strip away the confides of everyday life. Composed of long-form visual sequences and immersive, slowed cinematography, the film unfolds without dialogue. An original multi-genre score drives its rhythm, duration, and emotional tone. Eschewing traditional narrative, the film constructs a temporal and sensory experience, tracing shifts in movement, stillness, landscape, and collective presence across time. The result is a cinematic meditation on rhythm, atmosphere, and human proximity within a shared environment, inviting close attention to gesture, sound, and the fragile relationship between people and place. Serena Stevenson's 'Three Days in February' at the Civic was extraordinary; the best work of multimedia art I've ever experienced. And a profoundly optimistic one.
It was shot at Splore over several years, but it's really about people – people finding their little moments of joy, laughter, beauty and humanity. The way it's shot and presented – the close-ups of faces, run in slow motion on the big screen – is extraordinarily intimate, like looking into someone's soul. There's a repeated theme of getting back up.
The live soundtrack (with Pitch Black, a string quartet, a choir, and more) and the film itself were indivisible on the night. I don't think they knew whether all the work would come together until they did it, but it sounded and looked magnificent.
