MOA GREY LYNN spring campaign. 2016
Flower Portrait.
We were approached by Moa a fashion store in Grey Lynn with a 30 year history. They wanted to do something different for their spring launch.
We came up with the concept to invite some of their long standing customers to be a part of the campaign. To tell a story about a special flower. They each told a story of a flower that had meaning.
MOA in collaboration with Serena Stevenson has made exotic images that unite the femininity of a woman and their own personal flower. Flower portraits is a delicate intimate view of how fashion and women unite in a season of colour.
The flower with the story was posted on social media inviting others at share a story of a special flower. And a week later the person in the story was featured wearing one of the Moa outfits. The images were then famed with the stories a exhibited at the MOA Spring launch.

FACE VALUE
Global touring multimedia exhibition.
Photography and Film Installation.
2000 - 2009
Face Value Film installation.
The 37 minute film runs on a loop with each of the six stories as self-contained ‘chapters’, so the audience can choose to be up close and personal with one or all of the stories. The concept for this is that the stories are preserved as being personal and intimate unlike the conventional way of viewing a full length film in a cinema. Music is an integral element connecting each story.
Filmed on 16mm, DV and 35mm stills.
Funded by NZ Film Commission, Roy W. Dean Documentary Grant, and the artist.
Screened World wide - see list in 'Clients Section'.

The representation of the relationships and art of Moko from a personal perspective aims to be informative, enlightening, and intimate. Gaining a new experience is the potential outcome for the viewer, depending on their own connection to family, identity and human connection.
Each of the six stories has an individual personality so the music has been chosen to carry each story and to reflect the character of each. The style of the moving and stills imagery has been paced to faithfully represent the person, their relationship to the Moko and the connection between the artist and recipient.
Unique to the film is contemporary footage of facial Moko being carried out using traditional tools and technique.
Editing funded by NZ Screen Commission.
Project design and concept, producer, photography, filmmaker, Cinematographer - Serena Stevenson
Additional filming - Star Hart.
Editor - Joe
Colour Grade - Park Road Post Wellington.

The current social identity of ‘South Auckland’, (a term used to describe the district south of Auckland) is largely governed by media, often unfairly. In particular the youth of South Auckland are featured frequently in the local and national news.

Splore the momentous summer gathering of choice. From whanau and when to art, aroma, performance, and diversity - We are the Light showcases a collection of curated imagery from Splore’s spectacular past, as a moving installation at Splore Festival 2019.
We are the Light brings to life 20 years worth of celebrations at Splore. It features the work of two long time Splore photographic artists Serena Stevenson and Jason Burgess who have both worked ‘officially’ and otherwise for Splore for well over a decade. Their photos have been used for all manner of Splore promotions. Their imagery is as mysterious and evocative as it is life affirming.
We are the Light is a curated moving installation of light boxes that roam and pop up throughout the Splorescape as the sun goes down. Each of these 10 X A3, solar powered, light boxes will use an interchangeable selection of photographic art, featuring some of Serena and Jason's best loved images from the festival to-date. They ex-Splore the themes of Celebration, Whanau, Body, Environment, Art, Aroha, Freedom, Performance, When, Kindness, and most importantly diversity.
Splore people are encouraged to use the light for selfies and making their own photos with the light boxes. Many of these images finding a new life on social media with #Splore #exSplorethelight #wearethelight
